Amtrak cab control car 9635 brings up the rear of a Keystone Corridor train charging through the snow in Wayne, PA. Amtrak and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania recently invested in a number of enhancements to this line in order to re-introduce 110 mph electric service and 1.5 hour express trips between Philadelphia and Harrisburg. Unfortunately, a number of equipment and scheduling glitches have led to dismal on-time performance, especially on westbound trains.

Amtrak FL9 at Albany-Rensselaer NY station, December 1981. The FL9 was a unique dual mode locomotive, capable of using either the internal diesel engine, or running as a straight electric running off a third rail. They were used on the routes going into Grand Central Terminal in New York City that were electrified. Amtrak would generally change locomotives here at Albany, putting these on or taking them off trains to or from NYC.Scan from 35mm slide.

Sierra Nevada’s from Train by Loco Steve on Flickr.Via Flickr:
A Selection of images taken from the California Zephyr train on its Eastward journey through Emigrant Gap California in December 2010
Emigrant Gap is a gap in a ridge on the California Trail as it crosses the Sierra Nevada, to the west of what is now known as Donner Pass. Here the cliffs are so steep that, back in the 1840s, the pioneers on their way to California had to lower their wagons on ropes in order to continue. This Image also appears in 'Amtrak train Routes'

Bishops peak from the Coast Starlight by Loco Steve on Flickr.Via Flickr:
The yellow Union Pacific Locomotive is helping push this longer than usual train around Cuesta curves and up the grade . The two fancy carriages are privately hired and added to the end of the Northbound coast starlight They continued up to Portland and i caught back up with them a week later. This photo was taken from one of the train windows as it curves around the curvy track. If you highlight the map you will see how bendy it is.. There were three locomotives on the other end of the train anyway,In the background is Bishop Peak, the highest of the region’s nine rocky morros, or ancient volcanic mountains. At 1,559 feet, Bishop’s peak is a favorite hike for many locals.
